Today, on XX/XX/18 at approximately XXXX, I answered the company phone at my job and it was a call from a collection agency. XXXX XXXX from XXXX, XXXX, XXXX, XXXX XXXX stated that she was calling to talk about garnishing my check. She did not know it was me answering the phone but gave my name out and specifically stated she was calling about garnishing my check. I am not over HR. I am just a regular employee in the office. She didn't ask for my name until I asked was it illegal to give out employee 's name 's regarding garnishing checks to any employee.
I called the office to speak to the supervisor and was transferred to her number. After I told her not to call the office giving out my personal information, she stated it was not illegal because she sent a letter in the mail to my boss so that made it public knowledge. I am not a lawyer but I did study some business ethics and I know that is not true. She is only allowed to discuss collecting a debt with me or my employer/the person responsible for issuing my check. As a supervisor, I would also expect her to be competent enough to not make such a mistake no matter how eager she is collect money.
