I received a notice that there was some suspicious activity on my credit report, so I called the various credit bureaus to freeze my credit and to chase down fraudulent activity. I thought I was calling XXXX and ended up getting this company the Consumer Information Bureau ( their number is exactly the same as XXXX except for the first XXXX numbers ). As I was in the middle of a crazy day at work while also dealing with this, my guard wasnt as high as it typically would be. This company positioned itself as being a partner of XXXX and sold me a service that would monitor my credit, which sounded good in the moment but when I stopped to think about the call after I got off something didnt seem right. So, I started digging and this very much seems like a scam. Im still trying to get a refund ( working with my bank on this at this point ) but now Im additionally worried I may have connected with someone who will try to sell my personal information, which is particularly violating given I was calling after having had my identity stolen as part of a breech.
This company knowingly has picked a phone number close to XXXX hoping to have consumers in a situation like mine call them so they can take advantage of us in vulnerable moments. As far as I can tell, they dont offer anything beyond what you can do with the credit agencies and theyre charging good money for it. I cant believe I fell for this in the moment and I suspect there are many, many people like me who this has happened to.
At the minimum if this is a legit business, they shouldnt be allowed to have a phone number so similar to XXXX. And if they are not legit as I now suspect, the government should shut them down for fraud.

Scam on : XXXX Hello I would like to make a report on fraud alert. I was trying to Call XXXX @ XXXX to make a fraud alert and I didn't realize that I accidently dialed XXXX instead of XXXX. A lady answer saying she from XXXX and asked me for all my personal information including name, address, and my social security number. Then she says she can offer me a life time social security protection for life time for a one time charge of {$290.00}. Then i heard dog barking and someone laughing and thought it was weird and unprofessional. then when i had them look up info on my XXXX account they were not able to. I looked up the phone number XXXX and there were multiple scam reports stating that this lady was impersonating XXXX to steal money from people. She sent me an fake email and kept insisting to get my credit card number. I would like to report that it is a scam. They made there phone number similar to XXXX to trick people into calling them instead of XXXX. I would like someone to catch these fake scammers impersonating the IRS and XXXX XXXX of advise be careful and double check number to you call before giving personal information. I learned the hard way. Thank You

A company posing as XXXX has as phone number that is similar to XXXX 's phone number except the first three digits are XXXX instead of XXXX. This company knowingly deceives callers and attempts to sell them a {$300.00} consumer protection product.
XXXXXXXX XXXX number is XXXX XXXX. Be careful not to call XXXX XXXX or you could be scammed by a company called Consumer Information Bureau who claims to be affiliated with XXXX.
