I was called by the telemarketer who had my name, address, and telephone number, and the last four digits of my XXXX XXXX number. The company is Consumer Defense Group in XXXX Florida. I asked how they acquired my personal information. They claimed that I had asked the company to help me reduce my credit card rates. I know this to be patently untrue. I am very careful with my credit, I pay all charges at the end of the month and carry no balance. I would have no reason to try to reduce my XXXX XXXX credit card rate, nor any other existing consumer credit rate. I asked the company to disclose who provided them with my contact information and account number. At first they tried to imply it was XXXX XXXX, when I challenged this, they said they did n't know. At this point XXXX XXXX, a manager, got on the phone and tried to assure me that everything was legal. I asked him why they would not provide the source of my personal information. He refused. He told me he had an A+ rating at the Better Business Bureau and that he was an up and up business. I challenge that assessment, as his telemarketing call was in violation of federal do not call laws and that his refusal to give me the information about his source of my private financial data was a great cause of concern to me. At this point, he said have a great day and hung up. The phone number they used to contact me is area code XXXX. While this company puts up the veneer of respectability, one has to be concerned that at some point they may be using private personal information unethically. I make this assertion on the basis that it appears they 're violating federal telemarketing laws, and they may be inappropriately receiving personal financial data. It is not a big logical leap to worry that their ethics may be compromised.
